First Grade

The Jewish holidays continue to be a focal point for this grade, with emphasis on holidays that occur within the context of the home and family and their relation to the synagogue.  

 BIBLE

The first-grade students will learn and discuss Torah stories such as Creation and Noah.

 PRAYER

The children will master Shabbat and food blessings. They will be introduced to other blessings throughout the year.

HEBREW

The students will learn vocabulary words through oral presentation and games. 

JEWISH CONCEPTS

The students will become familiar with Jewish concepts such as tzedakah, mitzvot, the Jewish calendar and life cycle.

 SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Shabbat baskets: At the conclusion of the unit on Shabbat the children will, on a rotating basis, have the opportunity to take home a Shabbat basket for their family to use. The basket contains a challah cover and challah, little kiddush cup and grape juice, candlesticks and candles, along with copies of the blessings.

Shabbat dinners: During the unit on Shabbat, families will be invited to either host or attend a Shabbat dinner with other first-graders and their families.

Parent Connection: This is an ongoing reading program for the first-graders and their parents. In the fall students will begin taking home books to read and discuss with a parent. In January, on a rotating basis, each child and a parent will make a presentation to the class on a favorite book.
